What Is The Employee Assistance Program All About?

Many of us face painful, challenging personal problems at some point in our lives.

Fortunately, your labor union offers a program that can be of enormous help to us during difficult times. EAP offers free, confidential help to Members and their families when a personal problem develops.

How Do I Know When
 I Really Have A Problem?

We all have ups and downs.

It’s not always easy to decide when to ask for help. Your EAP representative can help you determine whether you need to take action. Remember, it’s better to deal with a problem before it becomes overwhelming.

Ask yourself these questions.

  • Do I think about the problem frequently or, am I always worried about the same thing?
  • Am I just telling myself the problem “isn’t that bad and it’ll just go away,” but it doesn’t?
  • Do I feel tired, frustrated, depressed, angry or sick?
  • Is my job performance or dependability being affected?
  • Do I feel like giving up?

What Services Does The EAP Provide?

Your EAP representative will provide a clinical assessment and will assist you in developing a plan of action that will meet your needs. If necessary, you will be referred to qualified service providers in your community. The EAP representative will also follow up with you to ensure that you are getting the help you need and that you are satisfied with the referral.

What Will This Cost?

The services of the EAP itself are free. If referral to a community service provider is necessary, your EAP representative will work with you to make effective use of health insurance benefits.

                                Is The EAP Really Confidential?

The program is confidential – unless you give your authorization for disclosure or as otherwise required by law.

Also, the Employee Assistance Program is voluntary. It’s up to you to decide whether or not you’ll follow EAP recommendations.

FMLA
 The Family Medical Leave Act

FMLA is a federal law sponsored by labor unions. It protects certain workers from discipline when using time away from work to care for their own serious medical condition, or that of an immediate family member.

Here's The Most Important Thing To Know About FMLA

If you have a dependability problem which is legitimately caused by your own serious medical condition (or a family member), then request FMLA.

It really comes down to just that.

Please do not make the mistake of unnecessarily subjecting yourself to company discipline for dependability.

FMLA requires specific things. For example, a worker must have worked 1250 or more hours in the preceding twelve month period. FMLA also has some loopholes, which United Airlines attempts to abuse. For example, your doctor must insert language into your paper work protecting your regular days off from counting towards FMLA.

Sound complicated?

It is somewhat. That's why you need a qualified EAP assistant to help with FMLA, and even to coordinate with your health care provider.

Don't allow United Airlines, or any company to abuse you. Instead, call the EAP Main Number for information and help.

How Does FMLA Differ From EAP?

The Employee Assistance Program is a program for helping employees. The Family Medical Leave Act is a law that protects certain employees who must be away from the work place. EAP and FMLA often go hand in hand.

The important thing isn't understanding all the differences. What is important is getting help with problems before they become overwhelming.

In the case of dependability and discipline, the important thing is to request protection under the FMLA law, rather than enduring abusive discipline from United Airlines.
